Koh Tao's history

The Koh Tao Island was unofficially known to fishermen and traders for centuries before its official discovery by King Chulalongkorn in 1890. The king's initials were carved on a boulder at Laem Jor Por Ror, a sacred site on the southern end of Sairee Beach.

Koh Tao's history also includes being used as a political prison after the Siamese Revolution of 1932 and abandoned after the prisoners were pardoned and sent to neighboring islands in 1947.

Abandoned again until two brothers from neighboring Koh Phangan settled on the island's beautiful corner and began farming and fishing. Soon, the island's fertile soils and excellent fishing drew people from nearby islands to settle there.

Fast forward to the late 1980s when the first backpackers discovered the island, spreading the word of its beauty quickly. The island slowly developed, with dive huts, shops, resorts, and later bars and nightclubs.

Since then, Koh Tao has rapidly emerged as one of Thailand's most popular islands, thanks to its safe and easy-to-navigate ferry connections to the mainland. Unsurprisingly, the island has become synonymous with scuba diving, luring diving enthusiasts from across the globe.

Despite its popularity, Koh Tao has remained true to its roots, preserving its pristine beauty and natural charm.

The island is accessible and welcoming to everyone, regardless of their budget or travel style. You'll find various accommodations on the island, ranging from budget-friendly backpacker hostels, cozy beachfront bungalows, and Dive Resorts to luxurious five-star resorts catering to the most discerning travelers.
